     21世纪初，机械制造业发展的特点是现代化高新技术的综合利用，其趋势是四化：即柔性化、敏捷化、智能化和信息化。再也不是以20世纪20～40年代发展起来的机械学科自身的成就――凸轮及其它机械为基础，采用专用机床、夹具、刀具、量具组成的流水式生产线――刚性自动化。刚性自动化的缺点是严重影响产品的更新换代，妨碍采用高新技术，产品在国际市场上缺乏竞争力。目前，我国机械制造业中，一些国营企业亏损，产品在国内外市场上缺乏竞争力，产品大量积压，除与经营管理体制有关外，与企业设备陈旧、工程技术人员知识老化有很大关系。
